Genealogy: An Interesting Field

Life is interesting and beautiful. We all go through many years of education to learn many things. But do we really take time to learn about ourselves? Do we know who are our grandparents, great grand parents or our relatives up several generations?

Genealogy is an interesting field. In Genealogy, one can know who his present relatives as well as ancestor are.

In the past, Genealogy was focused on royalties only. The lives of kings and queens were chronicled by expert genealogist. The genealogist carefully recorded the family ancestors of both sides of kings and queens and comes up with a family tree. This was particularly an important aspect in those eras especially that a lot of troubles and conflicts in the past stemmed from power and wealth grabbing.

Today, genealogy is almost a common household name as knowing the daily bills of modern living. Many family trees are going into genealogical research either for serious profiling or for simple hobby.

Genealogy can be as simple as asking relatives about family members or as serious as doing scientific research with genes.

The gene is the basic hereditary unit which provides the basic information of life. Genealogy comes from two Greek words “genea” which means family and “logos” which means knowledge. Segment of Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) compose a gene. A genealogical DNA test determines whether two individuals are related. Scientists keep databases which they use to match hundreds of people and thus determine a family tree. The genetic method of determining relationships is very important in recording migratory patterns of humans. This is used to analyze ethnic origins. For example, the United States in the old time was considered the new world for many Europeans. Using the genetic method, it can be easily determined which state has significant residents with ancestors coming from different European countries.

A simple method which can be done by family members is to do records research. Family members can sit down and jot down names of relatives and plot them into the family. Further research can be done in registry offices that keep records of births, deaths, marriages, divorces and other pertinent information.

There are many websites that offer free genealogical features. A person can create an account and start by listing all family relatives as much as he can remember. Then he will ask other relatives to sign in and add what information they have. Since the internet is accessible around the world, the initial list created by the person can grow fast. Random can people can be led to the listing through engines. Many people have been surprised to find out that new listings were added from people in other countries of the world. This technique is similar to social networking websites like friendster.

Many people in the past have worked extra hard to know about their family despite the limited resources of their time. In this modern information age, intensive researches about family members can be done by just sitting down and hitting the keyboard!

Do you want to know exactly who your ancestors were: where they lived; what they did for a living; whether that story of highwaymen, criminals and corrupt relatives is factual, or a figment of Grandma's over-active imagination?
